How to Sew A Maxi Skirt With A Split Tutorial
Hey there!
I am have another tutorial for you today! And as you can see, it’s all about how to sew a gathered maxi skirt.
I’ve made this tutorial super easy in that you do not need a sewing pattern to sew this maxi skirt. You just need a few measurements of your own body that I show you in this video below.
I made this DIY maxi skirt from easy measurements and added a sexy high split to spice it up for date night. I thought the polka dots in plain colors like navy and white needed a little spice to it.
My fabric is from a private supplier for my business. It is a polyester fabric. So, you can use any opaque non-stretch fabric you want for this. Make it fun, use a vibrant print for the spring/summer!
I styled it with a pink tee and knotted it in the back. These shoes are repeats and one of my favorite pairs of shoes. My accessories are from RocksBox.
In this tutorial, I show you how to sew this maxi skirt, start to finish. No pattern needed! And, I show you an easy gathering method that I use all of the time!
Get started on this easy project below!
If you wanted to make this skirt into a sexy dress, I’ve got a tutorial for that, too!

Where is the zipper located? On the side seam or center back?
it was very informative

Hey Eryn! This is my first try on any dress and i loved your tutorial. I got a chiffon fabric. Do you think i can use it to make this dress?
so each panel is 3/4 of your waist measurement or is it 3/4 cut on the fold which would be 1 1/2? just double checking
Hi! Love your tutorial but one question…you didn’t state the width of the waist band. How wide is it? Thanks, Chelle
The width of the waistband will be half minus 1 inch of whatever you cut it.
Example, if I cut a 6 inch tall strip of fabric, the finished waistband will be. 6/2 = 3 – 1 (seam allowance) = 2 inch finished waistband.
I don’t recall what measurements I gave in the video. But, this will help you determine what size you would like to cut for yourself.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank You!
I’m new to sewing, and I’ve been using primarily only cotton and other non-stretch blends. Its time to move on from handbags and little girls’ dresses… I have several yards of fabric I’ve been hanging onto for the perfect project for myself! This is it! I’ll be making this one today. Thank you for the great tutorial.
One suggestion… In this video, it was impossible to tell which side of the fabric was right/wrong. Maybe for teaching purposes, you could use fabric with an obvious difference, so we can see? Just a thought…
Thanks for everything.
Yes! Just draft your waistband an inch or two smaller than your waist to accommodate stretch. Or you can add elastic at the waistband instead of a zipper.
I have a beautiful paisley fabric that I’d love to make this with. It’s a stretchy knit, do you think it would work?
It’s 2.5 yards for the whole skirt.
When you say two and a half yards of fabric, that is just for the front panel? And then another two and a half yards for the back panel?
Yes, just cut out the front and back skirt pieces. Don’t cut the split up the front. And continue making it as shown.
Will it work ifor I follow the instructions but without the split? I think it looks gorgeous but I need it for a bible Institute and I can’t have thever split 🙁
I’m so glad I stumbled across your blog, I cannot WAIT to make this skirt……just snagged some dope dashiki material and was looking everywhere for a maxi skirt tutorial for non-stretch fabric, thanks so muc Eryn!
If you have tried maxi skirts, then you won’t go back. For most women including myself, the summer dressing can be tough and long skirts are the answer.
Thanks, Tiffany! Welcome!
Whoa. First time reader. I’ll be back for more! Loved your tutorial. ??
Hi Eryn question I have some African print fabric ( I think it is cotton) and was wondering if this skirt will work and not be too big or bulky. Thanks
Lovely.
I love your sewing space! I wish I had room for some dressers to double as a cutting table. My back screams at me every time I cut patterns on my portable table, but I just don’t have the room for any sort of permanent setup like that.
Thank you!!! I got nervous I’m pushing it to the selvage didnt want to over or under cut.
No worries! You will mark 28.5 out from the FOLD of your fabric at the waist.
This may be a crazy question, however dont want to cut my fabric wrong. I just got threw off on how may inches I mark the waist line on the fabric. My waist is 38. (38*3 / 4 = 28.5) The fabric I have is 57in. I’ve turned a easy project into a headache” Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you…
I think that would be gorgeous.
Love the skirt. Do you think it would be okay to make it in a pique fabric. I have some blue and white polka dot fabric.
