Hey there!I wanted to pop in with you today because I know that many of us still struggle with saying no, particularly when it comes to our talent of sewing.Do you hesitate to share with anyone that you know how to sew because you fear these dreaded words:
“You know how to sew? Can you hem some pants for me? It should be easy.” [insert eye roll]
“Can you make a dress for my daughter?”
“Can you make this skirt bigger in the waist? It doesn’t fit me anymore.”
“Can you sew curtains?”
“Ooh! I’m going to a ball next week, can you make a gown for me?”
Do you get anxious at the thought of disappointing a friend, relative, or coworker by saying no?Do having deadlines demanding your time on top of the million other things you have going on?Do you feel that if you take an order that you wont’ enjoy sewing as much as you do as a hobby?Maybe you just accepted a job, knowing that not only did you not want to do it, you did not have the extra time to do so.Do you kick yourself, or feel resentment because you were put in a situation where you felt you could not refuse? It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or you can sew a ball gown with your eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back, it still does not mean you HAVE to sew something for someone else if they ask.Listen, it is okay for you to say no. It really is.
Protect your space. Give yourself permission to say no.
For many of us, sewing is a release of a stressful day. It’s our way to escape our daily to-do list and to be creative.I understand that it may be challenging to say no to someone who keeps asking you over and over again to make something for them. It’s especially awkward if you have too see this person often. But, remember one thing: this is your time and your choice. You do have the power to say no. It may be uncomfortable and they may even insist. But, you can still say no.If any of this sounds like you and your situation, you’ll get some tips in this vlog I posted a while back on how to gracefully, but firmly decline those offers and keep your sanity!Protect your time, energy, and sanity. It’s all in your hands!Be well,E
