I’m so excited to show you how to make a knit body block today!
I’ve already begun making pieces from my block that I’ll be sharing with you next week.
I can remember being super intimidated at the thought of slopers, but I was excited about expanding my sewing skills by self drafting more pieces for myself. After taking a sloper class and spending a full weekend on it, I was overwhelmed and getting a bit frustrated (patience is not a virtue of mine). So, I learned about blocks and drafted my own.
Blocks are like building blocks that can be custom fitted to you. They include wearing ease and can be done in a variety of styles (pant, skirt, sleeve, jacket, swimwear, etc.) When I use mine, I simply trace the block onto clean drafting paper and make my design changes there, just like I did with the hooded dress I posted yesterday. It’s much better than starting from complete scratch.
Truth is, sometimes I just can’t find a pattern that suits my needs. But most times, I simply love the challenge of creating something from nothing and watching it come to life.
So, here’s the deal….I have other blocks that I can show you how to make, but I need to know that you’re interested in this aspect of sewing. Pattern-making is not easy and is definitely not a light effort to teach!
I have found that simpler instructions on making blocks may be easier to draft, but often need way more fitting adjustments because they use less measure points. There is no right or wrong way, it’s just up to your preference. My preference is to put in the effort up front, so that my back-end measurements and fitting is simple. Because, who wants to spend time fitting! Not me!
So let me know in the comments if you want more block tutorials and I’ll keep them coming for you!
So before you take the class, you will need to download this measurement sheet to complete your block. So, make sure you grab it.
